History:Wuhan College was originally started as Wuhan College affiliated to Zhongnan University of Economics and Law, as approved by the Ministry of Education of China. In 2012, the college was authorized to confer bachelor’s degree. In 2015, Wuhan College became independent as a private university providing undergraduate education by the approval of the Ministry.
Non-profit:Wuhan College is run by Wuhan Yidan Educational, Scientific and Cultural Development Co., Ltd. as a non-profit entity. Mr. CHEN Yidan, founder of the college as well as one of the major co-founders of Tencent Group, does not claim any return from this college by his investment. He has invested more than 2 billion yuan to build a new campus for the college and all tuitions collected are used for university development and student education. In 2016, Hubei Yidan University Education Development Foundation was established and has totally provided 162 million yuan to sustain the construction and development of the college. Apart from national scholarship and assistantship, the college offers its own scholarships every year, including some from social donations, such as CHEN Yidan Teaching Scholarship, Songhai Scholarship, Huazhi Scholarship, Tencent Scholarship, Grant Thornton Scholarship. These have added up to a total amount of 63.2474 million yuan since 2019.
Campus:Wuhan College, located at No. 333, Huangjiahu Avenue, Jiangxia District, Wuhan, is surrounded by the lake with a sailing education center on the water. The campus is adjacent to the Military World Games Village, and Metro Line No.8 has a stop at the East Gate of Wuhan College. The planning and design of the campus was led by Prof. HE Jingtang, a Chinese Architectural Design Master and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. The complex is organically integrated with the natural environment of Huangjiahu Lake. The space and layout are open and diversified, with unique style and grandeur. The Mr. and Mrs. Chen Yidan Library, Ma Huateng Academic Complex, Penguin Square, Confidants Academic Complex, Chenye Lab Complex, Virtus Inspire Lab Complex are all endorsed landmarks of social charity donation.
Disciplines:At present, Wuhan College consists of 8 schools and 1 division, namely the School of Accounting, the School of Finance and Economics, the School of Management, the School of Information Engineering, the School of Law, the School of Arts and Media, the School of Foreign Languages, the School of Marxism, and the Division of Liberal Education. The college has 33 undergraduate majors, covering 8 disciplines. Economics, management and law are traditional strength inherited from Zhongnan University of Economics and Law. Engineering (information technology) is distinctive by blending the elements of Tencent Group. And literature, arts, education and sciences are well combined and developed with aforementioned disciplines. Since 2015 as an independent entity, Wuhan College has been authorized to provide 2 undergraduate programs beyond the listed majors-- supply chain management and cross-boarder e-commerce. Both are the very first such programs among all universities in China. And the supply chain management is designated as a pilot program for New Liberal Arts construction by the Steering Committee on Teaching of the Ministry of Education. Now Wuhan College has 1 provincial strong and distinctive discipline (group), 6 undergraduatemajors under construction for provincial first-class majors, 7 provincial first-class undergraduate courses, 2 provincial teaching teams, 4 provincial excellent grass-root teaching organizations and 1 provincial teaching achievement award. At the same time, there are 57 collaborative education projects between industry and college granted by the Ministry of Education, 2 “Jingchu Excellent Talents” collaborative education projects, and 35 provincial research projects on education and teaching.
Resources:The faculty at Wuhan College is equivalent to 633.5 full-time teachers. Among them, 412 are full-time teachers, including 142 teachers with senior titles, 394 teachers with master’s or Ph.D. degrees, and 148 teachers with professional qualifications. Wuhan College has a total area of 964.53 mu (about 64.3 hectares) with 342,200 square meters of school buildings, various teaching and research equipment worthy of 75.8447 million yuan, 1,458,700 volumes of paper books, 21.5Gbps export bandwidth for campus network, 76 on-campus labs and training rooms, and 142 off-campus internship and training bases.
Education:The total number of students at Wuhan College is equivalent to 12,890, including 12,079 full-time undergraduate students. The goal of the college is largely focused on the education of quality skilled personnel. It promotes collaboration between industry and college by cooperating with major companies like Tencent, Huawei, JD.com, Chinasoft International and Dachu Network etc. It works with British professional associations to implement dual certificate education programs awarding both academic certificate and professional/qualification certificate to students. It establishes 4 undergraduate programs featuring accounting, financial management, software engineering and network engineering. Since 2016, Wuhan College has been approved to recruit students at tie-one level (the only one private university in Hubei Province). Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business hosts Cheng Kong Free Public Lecture, which regularly invites well-known entrepreneurs, professionals and scholars to give lectures to all teachers and students. Tencent Maker Space settled on campus is accredited as a National Service Space for Innovators by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China. Wuhan College is certified as an Entrepreneurship Demonstration Base for College Students in Hubei Province by the Provincial Department of Education to promote innovation and entrepreneurship. Since 2019, the students have won 746 national and provincial awards in various competitions of discipline, arts and sports. It has gained 30 national projects and 90 provincial projects in the College Students Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Program.
Research:Since 2019, Wuhan College has obtained 122 government-supported research projects at provincial and ministerial levels or above, and 75 industry-supported research projects. Among them, 3 are provincial major projects in philosophy and social sciences and 4 provincial key projects in Education Science Plan. It has completed 1 National Social Science Foundation project with a merit grade, published 91 papers in SCI, SSCI, EI and other core journals and 44 textbooks, and gained 17 national patents and 40 software copyrights. There are 5 provincial research and innovation teams, 1 development research award of the provincial government and 1 outstanding award in social sciences of municipal government of Wuhan.
International:Wuhan College has set up an ACA Accounting Class jointly with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, and a CIMA Financial Management Class in cooperation with the Royal Institute of Chartered Management Accountants. 8 well-known universities such as Cambridge University in the UK and Stellenbosch University in South Africa have established cooperative relations with Wuhan College. Since 2018, it has sponsored 131 exchange students by covering all cost. 158 students went abroad for advanced study, 81% of whom entered the world's top 200 universities (QS/THE). Cambridge University has hosted Cambridge Master Online Lecture and Wuhan College X Cambridge Global Learning and Engagement Workshop for campus students. Wuhan College is endorsed to provide degree programs to international students and currently has 94 students from 8 countries in the Belt and Road Initiative, such as Kazakhstan and Ethiopia.
Reputation:Since 2019, Wuhan College has received 99.5024 million yuan of social donation. The quality of students and employment rate top peer institutions in Hubei Province. In 2021, the application baselines for physics-preferred and history-preferred majors rank 3rd and 4th among peer institutions in Hubei Province. For 3 consecutive years since 2019, the initial employment rate has been 95.52%, 79.09% and 89.68% respectively, all higher than average level in Hubei Province. According to third-party’s research, the overall satisfaction of graduates, parents and employers with the college is above 90%. In the past three years, mainstream media such as People's Daily, Guangming Daily, China Education Daily and Changjiang Daily have published 364 reports on its reform and development, and talent education. In 2020, Wuhan College ranked 6th among private universities in China by Shanghai Ranking. In 2021, Wuhan College was the 3rd among private universities in China University Alumni Association Ranking.
